Fly Fishing sessions and demonstrations featured at Fryeburg home, garden and flower show

Here’s an opportunity to learn the basics of fly fishing.

New this year at the Home Garden Flower show to be held Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20, at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds, are fly fishing demonstrations and instructional sessions.

The show returns for its 18th year, and the 2018 editions features many new attractions including 20 exhibitors selling and demonstrating cannabis-related products, and oyster shucking demonstrations.

Sponsored by Orvis, distributor of quality fly fishing equipment, North Country Angler, retailers and guides based in North Conway, and Trout Unlimited, the FlyFishing 101 sessions are designed for beginners and will cover the basics: gear selection, casting, general fishing methods and rigging and knot tying.

These sessions give just enough information to de-mystify the sport and participants a foundation to build their skills.

The sessions will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m and 1 p.m. and are free to attendees. Space is limited and attendees must pre-register by calling North Country Angler, 603-356-6000.

Also, to be raffled by Orvis will be an Encounter 8’6” 5 weight rod/reel outfit as a prize, retail value of $169.

Along with the new offerings, seasoned favorites will be returning, including the Meet the Chefs cooking series, which this this year will be featuring international cuisine.

The Wine, Craft Beer and Cheese Pavilion is back, offering a mix of wines, micro-brews, meads and hard cider. Returning sponsors are Saco River Brewing, The Good Beer Store and Cabot Cheese.

Gardening has always been a big part of the show, and seminars on various garden-related topics will be taking place all three days. Participating garden centers will have perennials, annuals, shrubs and vegetable seedlings and organics.

The show this year is produced by The Conway Daily Sun, which bought it from Karla Ficker, who founded and built the show into a first-class event over 18 years. Ficker, however, is still very much involved and is assuring a smooth transition of ownership. As always, look for her at the show.
