11:30-12:00 • Cannabis Terpenoids

As medical marijuana gains greater public and research attention, most of the focus has been on the cannabinoids produced by Cannabis species, specifically the two most prominent: THC and CBD. In true appreciation of the cannabis flower, one should focus more deeply on the terpenoids, which are produced in wide array by Cannabis species. Terpenoids are highly aromatic compounds which give the plant its wide variety of smells and flavors, and they are certainly responsible for the diversity of cannabis experience one notes when using different strains of the plant. Extensive crossbreeding of cannabis strains has rendered the terms sativa and indica almost obsolete; understanding and predicting strain difference will likely come from appreciating the distribution of terpenoids in an individual plant, either through laboratory testing or through savoring the differences in fragrance or taste.

Dr. Eng will discuss the structure and function of terpenoids, which are the major components of many essential oils, cannabis and otherwise. Cannabis is said to produce more than 100 terpenoids. Dr. Eng will focus on a handful of the best characterized ones: limonene, pinene, myrcine, linolool and caryophyline. Learn the unique odor associated with each terpenoid, which other plants also produce them, and the unique medical applications associated with each of these compounds.

Presented by Dr. Michael Eng of Integrative Medicine

Dr. Michael Eng is a physician and board certified pathologist. For the last 4 1/2 years he has worked with Integr8 Health in Falmouth and Manchester, ME, and now has a private practice on Main St. in Bridgton, ME.
